In my American arrogance, I thought that we had the market cornered on stupid people being manipulated by the media and being used as pawns. I was wrong.
Some genius in Egypt decided that it would be a good idea to show a YouTube video the depicts the Prophet Muhammad as some sort of sex crazed maniac. While I'm sure the network spun this as an American attempt to degrade Islam, it was really just attempt to get the people stirred up and damn if it didn't work like a charm.
The Arab world went nuts... over a YouTube video; so much so that at least 4 men lost their lives when terrorist attacked the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya during a demonstration a protest... of a YouTube video.
The Whitehouse spoke out against the video (a fucking YouTube video) and Mitt Romney decided to call this an apology for American Values. While I agree, Americans do love YouTube and we do love shitting on each other's religions, something Mitt Romney should be well versed on, being a Morman and all, it is by no means an American value to degrade the prophet Muhammad. We have an understanding that as much as we disagree with each other on how to get on God's good side, you are free to do your thing and I'm free to do mine. That is why videos like "The innocence of Muslims" can even get made. The people at the network in Egypt were aware of this but saw a perfect opportunity to get a bunch of dummies pissed off and commenced to setting their pawns on the battlefield.
Regardless of the trash that spewed out of Mitt Romney's mouth, there is very little on YouTube that represents the bulk of the American people. It is almost ridiculous to think that the president of the United States would even have to involve himself in a matter over a low budget YouTube movie.
If the people of the Arab world should be mad at anyone, its the television station in Egypt that thought they could get people going by putting that trash on the air. Clearly, most Americans don't believe anything in the video. It is the singular work of a bunch of stupid people and as an American I'm a little offended that the Arab world would associate such stupidity to all of us. I'm also a little pissed at Romney for associating himself with it in the name of freedom.
We all know that people put dumb shit on YouTube. That doesn't mean anything about America accept that we have way too many stupid people with cameras. Anybody rioting right now should have known that years ago, though. The beauty of it, though is that there are a lot of intelligent people with cameras that also like to share their thoughts. The rioters need to break out their laptops and get the whole spectrum if they really want to see what America is about.
The President needs to just come out and inform the world that YouTube doesn't speak for America or its values. The Egyptian station should appologize for treating its public as fodder in their information war and as usual Mitt Romney needs to shut the fuck up.
